Coraline

An animated movie (and impressively accomplished stop-motion photography, not digital) based on a Neil Gaiman novella about a young girl who finds a passage in her new home in Ashland, Oregon, that to a parallel universe populated by much-more-agreeable version of her real-world parents and neighbors, except they all have buttons for eyes... and they want her to stay with them. Lots of creepy horror elements make this unsuitably intense for kids, in my opinion, although it works well as a childlike fantasy film for adult.

I saw this in the theaters when it first came out, nearly 20 years ago, and it holds up. Definitely deserves its reputation as an outstanding animated film.

And it's just incredible that this was done with dolls and puppets, although a little digital postprocessing was done to clean some things up. Doesn't take away from the accomplishment.
